How to pack: Carry-on only

suitcase-grey-coat-travel-1 How to pack: Carry-on only

It’s Wednesday and for the last days and weeks the weather was definitely not providing any summery feeling. Cold and rainy weather makes you just want to book the next flight to a warm beach destination… Right now, for me it is not about longer holidays (but I’ve been away for some time now :P), but still this doesn’t hold me back from looking for some weekend getaways 🙂 I’ve been thinking about exploring Switzerland a bit more. You know, often it is that you travel so far but your own country is full of adventures you haven’t discovered yet.

For a long time I took a large suitcase filled with everything I do (and don’t need) wherever I went around the world or within the country. Actually sometimes I’d even pack a small suitcase for a weekend trip! Needless to say, I was overpacking, as well as wasting time and effort with every extra jacket I just didn’t need to pack. So I started travelling with carry-on only on weekend-trips. Any more than that and I’ll still take a full size suitcase, packed 50-70% to allow room for shopping (especially when heading to a Shopping destination aka London).

This is the most important step: be logical and rational about what you should AND SHOULDN’T take with you.
The best way to plan is to write a quick list, starting from the top and working your way down your body (shoes last). Then think of the next category like: technology (laptop, phone, chargers, camera, etc.) and think of ways they can be reduced in size/weight.

The golden rule
While writing your list remember: PACK ONLY WHAT YOU NEED. Everything else you can buy when you’re there. Anything that brings an “I might need this” thought to mind, leave it out. Here are the bare necessities for a 3-10 day trip:

1 jacket
3 tops
2 pairs of bottoms (trousers/jeans/shorts/skirt)
1 pair of comfortable (walking) shoes
A day bag (backpack or handbag)
underwear  (depending on your trip length)
Make-up (don’t overdo it – foundation cream, poweder, concealer and mascara will do it)
If you are heading somewhere more tropical far away from your home country you might consider additional items
Skin (moisturiser with SPF, cleanser or make-up wipes and lip balm)

Now, to the packing. Some people are “rollers” while some people are “folders”. So the argument goes, “rolling” your clothes saves space and wrinkles, however I’ve tried both and tend to just fold my clothes because they are arranged the same way in my closet.

The Perfect Carry-On Bag
Here’s another big space saver: pack your heavy items (laptop, camera, etc.) in your handbag, as well as your cosmetics if you like to have them on hand. It’s always good to have a bag, where you have different pockets and not everything is messy and undicoverable when needed.
